I absolutely loved Captain Canuck, and I can tell you how excited I was, at the age of 12 and about a year into my comic-buying spree, to walk into the local Braemore Variety and see that first glorious issue in the stands.

I still have the full run of the series. Now, yes, I do have to say that, much like Stan Lee and the beginning of the Marvel age, it was Comely’s innovations more than his writing that I admired. He was not the best artist or writer, and you’re right, once Freeman and St Aubin came on, the quality increased dramatically.

I’d still love to see Captain Canuck (preferably the original version) start up as a solid, long-running series again.

George Freeman should have been a superstar. I’ll never understand why he wasn’t. OK, I can maybe understand (the illiterate phrase ‘too cartoony’ has haunted me too my entire creative life in comics), but I certainly neither agree nor will EVER appreciate the ‘reasoning’. George Freeman, I salute you!
